Actually, I regard the Guardian as a terrific product.
The fact that everyone has an immediate picture of a
"Guardian reader" is a tribute to superlative
marketing. Far more than any other broadsheet -
though the Telegraph is better than it was - the
Guardian seems to know who its readers are and what
they want.

So, if I were you, I wouldn't challenge the stereotype
too much. Beards may not be compulsory, but the
Guardian is a paper with clear values and a style that
a devoted band of readers enjoy. I wouldn't worry too
much about competition from the Independent as long as
the phrase "Guardian reader" continues to conjure such
clear connotations. The image may not be to
everyone's taste, but you aren't selling to everyone.
