Reports of the power of price comparison agents have been grossly
over-exagerrated.

Internet Monthly magazine ran a competition a couple of weeks ago in a
cybercafe
in London to see which shopping portal could get the best prices on 10
products
(books, CDs, DVDs, flights, booze, computer stuff....). ShopGenie, Valuemad,
NoBags and 2020Shops were some of the sites represented.

You'd expect the price comparison services to win hands down at books, CDs
and
DVDs, but they couldn't get the best price for The Matrix on DVD because
they
didn't scan Play247. (It was before Blackstar's 8.99 offer.) Why not?
probably
because they hadn't set up an affiliate partnership with the site.

As a punter, if a price comparison site promises to find me the lowest
price,
that's what I expect it to do. If it fails, I'm not going to trust - or
use - it
any more. If saving a couple of quid is that important to me, I'm better off
scouting round a few sites myself.

The mag's out in the next week or so with a full report -- and I guess I
wouldn't
be telling you if I wasn't pleased with the results. :-)

More recently I bought Enema of the State on CD for 8.99 from
www.cd-wow.co.uk
(cak-looking, low prices). The CD arrived in five days, no P&P (and they
sent it
from Hong Kong). The best a price comparison site could come up with was
11.99.
