When talking about the effectiveness of banner adverts lets not forget the number of 'fish' are increasing all the time. Many new users (particularly at this time of year) have never been exposed to banner adverts before so even the most staid will be novel to someone. It just raises the question - who is the target audience - experienced or inexperienced web users.
