I am looking to add a feature to our community based site that allows us to
issue fairly detailed (10+ questions) surveys to our members.

Creating HTML based forms and emailing the results to set a address has been
the tried and tested solution, but last time we did it we were hit by over
1000 responses....a collation nightmare to say the least

Are there any tools out there that let you create, publish and review the
responses of surveys online? I've seen some, but they seem to be charging
2+ per response - not very good value.

If you do this regularly it would pay you to have a custom made feature
built into your web site. I would suggest that you use form(s) on the site
to store responses in a database instead of e-mailing them (or as well as,
if you want to "watch the results rolling in"). That way you can download
the data in a file and import it into a spreadsheet or other tool to create
reports from it that mean something, without any re-inputting. 1000+
responses is far too many to be re-keying imho - aside from the time it
takes there is a big opportunity to introduce errors into the data.

A reasonably simple database-enabled survey would cost you less than a
single survey at the above rates to set up, and could then be used again
with different questions. We did a similar thing for www.growthmarkets.com
(see http://www.growthmarkets.com/questionnaire/) recently. A fully
customisable system that let you chose types of questions and do the
analysis on-line might take a couple of surveys to pay for itself, but would
have the advantage of having no marginal cost to use, so you could increease
the survey frequency without worrying about cost if it suited your business
to do so. If you'd like a quote for putting this kind of functionality into
your web site give me a call or drop me a mail off-list, I'm sure we could
come up with a cost-effective solution.
