>From our stats - if someone visits our homepage (www.first48.com) - and

are interested - then they will take 45 seconds to leave and go to the next
page on our site. If we hold someone too long on the first page (by putting
up too many options) then we haven't started them exploring the site - so
you may lose them altogether as a visitor.
Some of our visitors go straight into the relevant page that they are
looking for (bypassing the first page) - and they get their informaiton in
the 45 seconds -> 1 minute - - and they are out of the site - this is not
seen as an unsuccessful visit - just a brief one. They may well return as we
gave them the info that they wanted. (such as a link to another company - or
a bit of information such as whether a visa is required for travel to XYZ)
People who are buying stay for 10 - 15 mins or so - not because it is
difficult to buy - but because of the choice available (people need to feel
happy about the holiday they are about to buy - this is not like buying an
item that is well known or reviewed elsewhere). They also come back time and
time again before they buy (not disclosing real stats anymore now that I
realise that these messages are getting put on the chinwag website - and
google has picked up some of my previous posts that gave some of our ideas
away! - I dont think our competitors are on this list but they can use
google !)
On tescos I see that the site duration is 30 mins (latest NMA) - I guess
that this is becuase of the required time to complete a transaction (still
shorter than in the shop)
Some stats can be confused by people who leave their computers on your site
having left you physically. As I write we have someone on our site who
hasn't changed pages for the last 2 hours - but they are still online - and
looking at one of our pages - but I don't guess that this should be included
in our site duration stats.... this is also changed by the fact that our
cybercafe in Kathmandu, Nepal keeps our site up on the screens! - again
changing the duration statistics.
In my mind I more effort should be made on making sure that each customer
wants to be on your website - don't do advertising that gets someone to your
first page but then does nothing more. If other sites are averaging 1 min
then this is a lot of "ins & outs" - as I rekon that it takes 45 seconds to
read the first page...
