On 6/10/98 I read (from Ray):
>I am moved by beauty, compassion, humanity, courage, wisdom and many
>other high ideals. But I am NOT moved by web site design any more than I
>am by toilet paper design, but I appreciate when both jobs are done well
>and irritated when either is done badly.
Balzac would have hated you, Ray!
Good design is about the effective fulfillment of function. Great
design seduces too. I like having a business partner who produces
seductive work. And I like the fact that some clients will pay for
that skill because they believe that relationship marketing (for that
is what we are doing with web stuff) can be enhanced by seductive
packaging. You're right though, it is an unbalanced partnership -
functionality can be successful without form, whereas it is difficult
to have success based on form without functionality. But isn't life
about making your environment more pleasing? Or should we all live in
'50s tower blocks? And does your point of view not decry brand
advertising altogether in favour of direct marketing?
Best wishes
Felix
