There's a company called LocalNet in Canada, who have a WebTV-style
offering called the LBN Tele-TV Unit. With an unwieldy name like that,
I doubt their marketing abilities.
I'm assuming that these are the people you mean...
In essence, LocalNet reckon that they have a propriety 'twisted pair'
(whatever that means) technology that will allow the transmission of
broadcast-quality video down the phone line. I'll believe it when I
see it. They claim that their product can be upgraded to a full
Pentium PC with the magic addition of their PCMCIA card. They say they
will be implementing a video-conferencing application in the coming
months also.
They are also developing LBN, the LocalNet Broadcast Network which
will provide interactive content for the set-top market.
I'm not aware of any of their activities in this country. Off the top
of my head, I wouldn't even dream of competing against the current
set-top offerings in the market: WebTV, @Home, et al unless I had a
real killer app for the technology. If LocalNet come through with all
their promises, then their real battle is with the logistics of their
operation: MarCom, Fulfilment/Distribution, Credit Control etc.
A superior technology will never succeed in the marketplace unless it
is marketed effectively against the competition. Ask the developers of
Betamax...
