A company here in Ireland tried a similar scam recently. They hooked up a
direct marketer's database to a web front end and then sent invoices to
13,000 companies advising them that they had a FREE! web site but had to pay
an annual charge of 85 for hosting. The press were averted and the sharp
practice was starkly outlined in a number of national dailies and business
magazines for the benefit of the invoiced companies. The company itself has
since retreated into the shadows of ignominy, suitably chastened by the
experience. If this company is trying the same thing, perhaps you could
adopt a similar approach.
