Hi Fiona
I think there are two key problems with WAP uptake.
The first is that, despite a relatively high penetration of WAP enabled
phones, the average consumer doesn't know how to use the services available
or where to find them. A historic example of a similar model is the BBC
which was started as a purely commercial venture by Marconi to encourage
radio sales - however it took a national state of emergency - in the form of
the general strike of 1926 to expose the power of the medium. In a far more
corwded marketplace the WAP service providers need to educate and encourage
the uptake of their services to ensure consumers and businesses see their
mobiles as more than a phone.
Second, the majority of services that are being offered via wap are
simultaneously being offered through the longer established and more common
text messaging services on older and current phone models. Meaning the 'if
it aint broke.....' scenario is also at play.
A client of mine is one of the old technology competitors in this feild and
would be happy to provide comment and information for your article if you
require it.
