Stewart Brand (The Clock of the Long Now), Danny Hillis, Brewster
Kahle (Alexa) et al think this era will be thought of as a dark age
in the future because nothing we currently create in the digital
realm will be even readable let alone archived and indexed. The Long
Now people plan some kind of enduring archive for things digital
(with a proposed lifetime of 10,000 years) and have concluded that
the only way to record fugitive written culture is to lift it out of
the digital realm all together and inscribe it on discs of nickel to
be read using a microscope.
