Have a look at Stewart Alsop's column in the current Fortune magazine for a
real business-technophile's view of WAP.

This man is no Luddite, but runs a VC company and is a serious proponent of
digital technology.

Hi Fiona
I think there are two key problems with WAP uptake.
The first is that, despite a relatively high penetration of
WAP enabled
phones, the average consumer doesn't know how to use the
services available
or where to find them. A historic example of a similar
model is the BBC
which was started as a purely commercial venture by Marconi
to encourage
radio sales - however it took a national state of emergency
- in the form of
the general strike of 1926 to expose the power of the
medium. In a far more
corwded marketplace the WAP service providers need to
educate and encourage
the uptake of their services to ensure consumers and
businesses see their
mobiles as more than a phone.
