Managing expectations comes to mind!!
Having been in telecoms for most of my career Ive seen the evolution from
analogue to digital and then the explosion of SMS and mobile data which I
was marketing back in '96 and thought was the most exciting thing at that
time.

I agree people dont know how to use their phones but what can you expect
when some network advertising is totally misleading and some distribution
channels i.e. supermarkets havent got a clue how a phone works. To overcome
this buyers should stick to the specialist retailer when buying value added
services such as WAP. I know the carphones warehouse are starting an
initiative to ensure all customers are WAP happy when they leave the store.
Not sure how this is going but the networks should introduce this within
their own channels as well.

Saying that, I really wouldnt write WAP off there is too much investment by
the manufacturers and networks to let it go.
For me WAP has a purpose, mainly email and some lookup stuff. Its not really
a surfing tool and not everyone has a need for it but give it a chance,
progress comes in stages. If i-mode does come over then we will have a
choice, nothing wrong with a bit of competition to gee up the development
process.

Marcus would love to hear from your friend when hes over.

Despite the success of i-mode in Japan, my friends in Tokyo informs me that
WAP is actually a far better protocol for development of the mobile
internet. The reason that i-mode has been successful is not the technology
but the marketing by NTT DoCoMo. The think that WAP seems to be missing at
the moment is the delivery platform and decent handsets.

Anybody else got info on the 'let's not write WAP off just yet side of
things'?

On of one my friends who develops i-mode sites will be coming to the UK
sometime in November. If there is interest from the list I will ask him if
he will lend us the benefit of his experience over a beer. Any takers?
