Justine,

Some ideas:

Tie to a "real world" membership scheme, something like a Blockbuster or
Electronic Boutique loyalty card, so that the voucher has to be used with a
card in the shop, and hence can be traced: one use per card. Can use this
approach to then drive up membership: register first before receiving the
voucher.

Include a "use by" date. If it's to be used over a month or so, create
different voucher designs for each week, that staff can be made aware of,
which limits to some extent photocopy abuse.

Limit ability to print: create a link to a pop-up console that displays a
"Specimen" voucher (i.e. no browser toolbars), and include JavaScript that
inhibits right mouse click functions, so after one "print" action, the
voucher isn't displayed again, just a message: "on no you don't smarty
pants". Also prevents those in the know from just "print screening", as the
actual voucher isn't displayed, just the specimen one.

Or, have the vouchers in-store, and not printed at all. You register online,
which adds you to a list of eligible names and addresses, and have that list
accessible and in-store so that users can be "checked off", and the list
updated.

If you have to print, control the printing process. Link up with a national
or regional paper/s depending on target territory, or a specific brand of
petrol station (if the majority of your target market are car users),
distribute through them, and use email to advertise the voucher's
availability.

As far as the photocopy brigade goes though, at the end of the day, if your
client's still making money on each item despite the voucher, then all
he/she's got to worry about is increased sales!

Take the US McDonald's route to vouchers (sorry to mention the BigM - can't
stand them myself) which includes accepting all vouchers from competitors as
well as their own. Although obviously they cost nothing to make... and have
no nutritional value... and just create more "Stepford" users... so they can
afford to... and... oh... doh! (caveat, ahem, "alledgedly")

Hope this helps! :-)

Darren

Subject: UKNM: Online Coupons?
Importance: High

Dear all

Can anyone help?

One of my clients is interested in e-mailing coupons, so recipients can
print them off and take them into shop to redeem. However they only want
each recipient to have one coupon.

So, is there any way to limit the number of times a 'coupon' can be printed
from an e-mail?

I suppose in a way I'm looking for a 'this coupon will self-destruct after
use' option

Also if it is possible to do the above is there any secure way of ensuring
the unscrupulous don't just photocopy it - a security code won't help cos
there's too many retailers who aren't linked

Please e-mail me on or off-list.

Thanks

Justine
