Subject: UKNM: RE: University v. Drop Outs

Reading the Larry Ellison talk it made me think of one thing. Amongst all of
this, is there anyone who completed University that would like to argue
against doing it? Come up and have your say.

It seems our 'Larry' had a bee in his bonnet - a point to prove - a chip
that he couldn't fit into a motherboard. He made sure that he went to the
best place to prove it. Move on, Larry, you've achieved a lot and can be
proud of it. Let the past be. Don't bother trying to justify your own
life.... and yet give thanks as feeling a 'drop out' helped spur you on to
prove yourself, congratulations on being so.... rich!

But, think about the statistics - less than 10% of people go to University
(stat not checked... !) so that means that there is at least a 9:1 drop-out
to Uni student ratio. Yet even with the advantage, if we looked at the ratio
of the top businessmen across the world - I think that we'd find that
University students somehow come up top more often than not. So, considering
his position, it does seem that his logic leaves a little to be desired - it
works in one-off cases...

There is a second problem, although it is wonderful to see people like him,
Branson and others succeed without University treatment, we forget about the
other millions who don't get very far because they dropped out. It's similar
to the football world - many youngsters want to be professional footballers
and yet, of all that wish it, a thimbleful of people make it. Those that do
have untold riches (and don't get the 'fat cat' harrassment) but those that
don't usually end up in unskilled professions because they never thought
'what if... '.
