terry,
ben's advice is spot on! when i was working with the guide marketing group
at
www.about.com, we often advised our guides not to use the software. they
submit
to erroneous sites and many of the search engines reject submissions.
the best thing you can do is to optimize your keywords & meta-tags and
submit
by hand. you can use some of the software to report your positioning. chris
sherman, about's search engine guide has a few tips on how to optimize.
check these pages out where he has the various tools and tips listed:
http://websearch.about.com/internet/websearch/msub2-m03.htm
http://websearch.about.com/internet/websearch/msubmenu2.htm
danny sullivan's site, http://www.searchenginewatch.com as well as chris'
site
are excellent resources to learn about the latest trends in search engine
rankings and operations.
another tip is to check out your competitors and see how they are ranking.
look
at their source code & read their tagging. take the keywords and see if
where
they come up in the top engines.
optimization is an ongoing process.
good luck!
