You are correct, and you can't 'de-register', you can 'fail to renew'. Your
client can hold the domains without using them and there is nothing the
tardemark owner can do apart from apply to the domain arbitration service.
If
they want to buy them then your client would be advised to sell them for a
VERY nominal fee to cover his costs only.
