Neil
I think that another factor that most people forget when dreaming up
their business plan (I've been guilty of this myself in the past) is
that retail is a very unusual industry, and one that requires experience
that is not gained in any other field. I remember hearing about a bunch
of fatcat directors sitting round a board table, realising that between
them they represented every major industry and market in the UK, except
one - retail. To their credit, they all also realised that it was
probably the one area to which they could not make a useful
contribution, as none of them had any experience in it whatsoever. In
fact, most of them seemed *scared* of it. Most e-retailers seem to have
very little real retail expereince in their mgmt teams, but blithely
assuyme that it is a simple nut to crack. We can be such arrogant
fools, sometimes!
