Description
The aim of Software Freedom Day (SFD) is to engage with and encourage personal computer users, local businesses, government bodies and other groups to consider the use of free and open source software.
Event Plan Live demonstrations showcasing some of the best free software available. Talks and advice from local free software experts. Workshops conducting computer recycling and GNU/Linux installations. Free software and other giveaways. Free culture and free media exhibitions. Refreshments, in the form of fair-trade beverages, biscuits and cake. Literature and merchandise on sale.
Venue The venue for this year's event is the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester <http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/>; appropriately the birthplace of the world's first stored-program computer - the Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM) nicknamed “Baby” <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Small-Scale_Experimental_Machine>.
The main event will take place in the Kilburn building on Oxford Road <Google Maps>, a building named after one of Baby's creators. Doors will be open from 10am to 4pm.
Socialising Following the main event, celebrations are expected to continue throughout the evening where food, drink and fun will be top on the agenda. Venue to be confirmed.
