Digital Surrey: From snapshots to social media - the changing picture of photography

On 21st July, Professor David Frohlich, Director of Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey is delivering the key note talk for Digital Surrey.
Kindly sponsored and hosted by Canon UK & Ireland, David will be demonstrating that the sharing of digital media within on-line social networks is a relatively recent practice with its roots in much older activities such as domestic photography.
In this talk, David will draw on a new history of analogue and digital photography to show how the use of images in everyday life has changed with innovations in technology and business. Social practices appear to shape and be shaped by technology and the way it is sold and marketed to consumers, as shown by the story of the birth of the family album and its current replacement by multimedia archives. Some implications for the design of new technologies in this area will be discussed.
Canon will be generously hosting Digital Surrey members: in addition to a welcome drink and some nibbles, there will be a range of their latest kit available to look at and play with, as well as a number of Canon technical experts to answer any questions. In addition, there will be a competition for one lucky person attending David's talk to win a Canon digital camera .
After the talk we will be gathering for drinks and networking at Reigate's The Beehive pub, apparently the best real ale pub in the town!
