UKUPA Careers Event 2012 Thursday 21 June 2012 at 18:30 at Thomson Reuters.

This event provides a forum where employers and practitioners can meet, network and learn. Kindly hosted and sponsored by Thomson Reuters.

The event will include the following tracks, all running in parallel:

  • The popular “speed dating” style format for those actively looking for a job
  • A number of UX booths in the networking area, offering professional development services to junior and senior practitioners
  • A presentation with extensive Q&A for practitioners keen to evolve their career in the long term.

You will have to choose either the speed dating or the presentation with Q&A. A networking area (with refreshments) and booths will be available throughout the evening.

‘Speed dating’ - How to find your perfect partner (employer or candidate) Are you currently looking for a job? You will have the opportunity to meet a selection of different companies who are recruiting for UX roles. Each interview lasts 5 minutes, then on to the next one!

  • Research the companies before attending the event
  • Update and refine your CV (better: customise your CV for each company)
  • Bring business cards, portfolio, or something that will make you memorable

Talk with Q&A - Beyond practice: Stepping into the board room

Even if you are not looking for a job you can still get advice about developing your career. Whether you are a practitioner looking to make the step into management or starting your own business, or maybe a freelancer pitching to senior stakeholders, you will need more than your UX know how to be successful.  Although you can learn many of the skills needed to improve your success as a manager or leader, most of it comes down to your attitude and values.

Leslie Fountain will give a short talk, which will be followed by an audience Q&A session.

The panellists

Leslie Fountain: Leslie is the Managing Director at Foolproof and brings with her over 15 years experience in Human Centred Design; from workstation design to requirements gathering for display systems for armoured vehicles, medical products and uncovering new opportunities for clients branching out into new sectors.  Leslie holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Ergonomics and an executive MBA.

Andy Budd: User Experience Designer and CEO of Clearleft, Andy is the author of CSS Mastery, co-founder of Fontdeck.com, and the brains behind Silverbackapp, a low cost usability testing application for the Mac. Andy is a regular speaker at international conferences like The Web 2.0 Expo, An Event Apart and SXSW. He curates the dConstruct and UX London conferences and co-founded the city wide Brighton Digital Festival. Due to his work in the industry, Wired Magazine named Andy one of the 100 most influential people in the UK digital sector, much to the pride of his mother and the surprise of everybody else.

Giles Colborne: Giles has been working in user centred design since the Web was a twinkle in the eye of Tim Berners Lee. He's worked client side (creating some of the first commercial websites), managed UX teams in global agencies and founded cxpartners in 2004, growing an internationally recognised consultancy and hiring and developing staff at all levels.
