A one-day workshop to give participants a greater understanding of the importance of business planning and cash flow forecasting, as well as issues surrounding tax and national insurance. You will come away with invaluable tips on how to organise yourself more effectively and think like a business.
Content:
• How to take control of your finances, and ways to think about set-up costs • Types of business: self-employment, sole trader, limited company, and
partnership
• Schedule D versus Schedule E
• Tax & National Insurance: how it works, and what it can do for you
• Tips for getting organised: sorting paperwork, keeping track of contacts,
insurance issues
• VAT for freelancers (including flat rate scheme)
• Getting paid: invoice tips, and chasing late payments
• Planning to succeed: cash flow planning
• Marketing yourself
Materials & ongoing support:
Participants will receive handouts with tips and tools to help them deal with the
paperwork as efficiently as possible.
All delegates will also have access to a secure website for download of useful
spreadsheets and templates, and will receive follow up support by email and
phone.
Who’s it for?
This workshop is for experienced freelancers, and those just starting out, with limited knowledge of business skills and finance. It's relevant to anyone who'd rather hide under the duvet than sort out their paperwork or chase late payments.
Workshop leader:
David Thomas has been a journalist, broadcaster and trainer for 30 years. He set up his own training business David Thomas Media Ltd in 2005. He specialises in business and marketing workshops for freelancers in the media and entertainment industries, working regularly with unions such as BECTU, as well as former BBC & ITV staff going freelance.
