Start-Up Finance: When, Where, and How to Fund Your Venture

Starting and funding a business is one of the key challenges for any entrepreneur. In this ‘Access to finance’ session, we hope to demystify the process and procedure of funding at various stages of business growth, and give founders real insight and improved odds of finding the right type of funding at the right time for their business and commercial ambitions.
Leading industry practitioners from across the growth capital spectrum will be explaining the ‘in’s and outs’ of seed funding, crowdfunding, Angel investment, VC and later stage growth, alongside an entrepreneur’s perspective on raising and managing finance throughout the growth cycle.
This session is aimed at budding and established entrepreneurs who’d like to know more about the ‘when, where and how’ of financing an their business. The evening will consist of a series of short presentations from each of our domain experts, and will conclude with a panel session to consolidate learnings from the evening and offer a platform for audience Q&A.
Nick Badman is the Chairman of the Peter Cullum Centre for Entrepreneurship at Cass. After early practice as a corporate lawyer with Clifford Chance, Nick decided to "do the deals rather than the documents", and joined 3i - the leading venture capital and private equity group. Nick held numerous roles with 3i - latterly becoming a senior partner in 3i's pan-European buyout business and Head of UK buyouts - 3i's largest business unit controlling major stakes in businesses such as Travelex, HSS, ERM, NPC and Hobbs.
Jane Reoch is the Investment Director for the Cass Entrepreneurship Fund. She has worked with growth businesses over the past 11 years at PwC, Lloyds Banking Group, the Business Growth Fund and Panoramic Growth Equity. She is a CA, a first-class graduate of Edinburgh University and a business mentor for the Prince's Trust. Jane has led the investments into Alva Group, Cloud Business, Contego Fraud Solutions and Accutrainee.
Jenny Tooth, since July 2012 has taken the role of CEO of the UK Business Angels Association, the trade body for angel and early stage investing. Jenny has been providing strategic support to BBAA since its establishment in 2004, supporting both policy and interfacing with Government, as well as developing the trade body’s major annual events. Jenny has over 20 years’ experience of supporting SMEs access to investment, both in the UK and internationally.
James Butler is the Founder & CEO of Cloud Business. Cloud Business are one of the UK’s fastest growing cloud tech companies. Established in 2009, the company was originally founded as a customer-focussed IT consultancy, and has since grown to offer managed services, commercial software, connectivity and communications, alongside a comprehensive collection of training tools.
George Whitehead is Venture Partner Manager at Octopus Ventures. He is developing Octopus’ network of entrepreneurs and expanding the range of expertise offered by Octopus Venture Partners. He is an active champion of Angel and Venture Capital investing and his career to date has been focused on setting up businesses, helping entrepreneurs and building A-grade management teams. He is a founder and Chairman of the Angel CoFund.
Justin Pritchard is Director of TMT Corporate Finance at Ernst & Young. He is a senior member of Ernst & Young's Global Telecommunications, Media, and Technology M&A Advisory Services group. He has twelve years’ experience in transactions across all three sectors and he has completed a number of cross border transactions. From 2007-2009 Justin was a Director at Macquarie Capital (London). Justin won Telecom Finance Emerging Market Deal of the Year in 2007 for the LBO of Radiokomunikace and holds an MBA from Cass Business School (London).
