Data science: origins, trends, and the future?

Data Science ... the term is everywhere now, on the news, recruitment sites, technology boards. "Data scientist" is even named to be sexiest job title of the century. But what is it, really? Is it just a hype or a term that will be with us for some time?
This session will investigate where the term is originating from and how it relates to decades of research in established fields such as statistics, data mining, visualisation and machine learning. We will investigate how the field is evolving with the emergence of large, heterogeneous data resources. We will discuss the objectives, tools and challenges of data science as a practice, and look at examples from research and industrial applications.
The session is suitable for anyone interested in hearing about the trends in data analysis and those who wish to gain a basic understanding of how data is converted into valuable knowledge.
Dr. Cagatay Turkay
is a Lecturer in Applied Data Science at giCentre in the Computer
Science Department at City University London. He has a PhD in
visualization from University of Bergen. He also served as a visiting
research fellow at the Visual Computing Group at Harvard University in
2013. His research mainly focuses on designing visualisations,
interactions and processes to enable the tight integration of
interactive visualizations, data analysis techniques with the
exploratory capabilities of analysts. He works with experts in various
domains such as biomedicine, transport, or intelligence. This year he
acts as the paper chair for the EGUK CGVC 2015 conference, co-organises
BioVis 2015, and have been acting as a committee member and reviewer for
various conferences and journals in visualisation and computer
graphics.
