Hi Glenn,
Unless you are using bitmap images in you Flash movie, the actual pixel
size of your movie is not really important. What is important is the
proportions of the stage. Flash is vector based and therefore scalable.
So it doesn't matter if a movie canvas size is 575 by 310 pixels or 1150
by 620 pixels. If you set either of the above examples to play at 100%
both will look the same on the same computer.
If you are using bitmap images in your movie and it is important to
have the bitmaps look crisp and non-pixelated, then it is wise to set an
absolute size in pixels in the parameters settings for the web.
As to smoothness of animation, it is not so important what the size of
the movie canvas is. What does matter is, first the complexity of the
animated elements, second the percentage of the canvas involved in the
animation and third how extensively you use such effects as alpha
channels, special lines, etc. For example, a small circle bouncing in
one corner of the screen is going to play more smoothly than a cartoon
of a persons head that fills the canvas and has a lot of facial
expression changes on all the features simultaneously. I am not saying
not to use these effects only to be aware of their cost and plan
trade-offs as much as you can.
