Well, because the SWF format is tagged (like HTML), then older players will
tend to ignore things they don't understand. The SWF3 format supports movie
loading, just as the SWF4 format does, so the presence or absence of
certain newer tags shouldn't change much.
Have you tried it yourself yet? If you're trying to make a file that can
play in older players, but which dynamically downloads some MP3-compressed
audio in newer players, then have you considered trying to set a variable
in the main movie? You can then test whether this variable was successfully
created and load the special movie if so.
