Subject: RE: FLASH: Setting MIMI Type

I'm no expert and I recommend you read the help at Macromedia - they
have some articles on settings MIME types and the embed/object tags.

All I do know is that the web server must have the MIME type set as this
regulates how the file is sent, either binary or text. I may be off the
mark but that's the general gist of it. Now days most web server admin
staff should have setup Flash mime types on the server as Flash is so
prevalent.

Sorry for the vague thoughts :)

Paul, I had problems with the mime-type and Netscape once (it wouldn't
play
although I hade the plug-in) and I solved it by putting the mime-type
within
the Embed-tag. Nothing was done to the server. Why did it work? Do you
need
to set the mime-type in both places?

Your web server HAS to have the Flash MIME type set. Its got nothing to
do with the browser. Unfortunately I cannot tell you how to set the MIME
type. Normally all you do is email your web server administrator and
they do it.

I think that Flash automatically takes care of the Mime-type for
netscape,
by setting it in the HTML-page. And for IExplorer it's not necessary at
all.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

here is some valuable info about MIME that i saved from an earlier
posting
from John C.
1) That MIME is important to be set to prevent such problems as crashing
browsers.
2) That it is a setting made by the administrator of your server.
3) That just seeing a picture in Netscape is no indication of whether
the MIME is set properly for Flash orNOT.
4) That setting the MIME actually takes less than 5 minutes and needs to
be set only once for Flash.
5) That there are 2 easy ways to test for MIME.
6) That detailed information about MIME is available for users and
Webmasters at the Flash Tech Resource including how to set it on most
servers.
