16 bit color is a web designer's worst nightmare... it even destroys most of
the web-safe color palette:
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/00/37/index2a.html?tw=design
my solution? i just gave up, i design everything in 24 bit color and pray to
god it looks ok. most 16bit color doesn't shift TOO much, the important
thing to remember with 16 bit color is never to use HTML background colors
(even websafe ones) sitting up against graphics or flash files with a
background of the same color. instead, i'll create a 10x10 or so .GIF of
that color and use a background image instead.
for an example of how things look if you DON'T do this (haven't gotten
around to fixing it yet) view the splashpage at www.morocco2001.com in 16bit
color. about 25% of people won't notice anything out of the ordinary, but
most people will see a color shift running across the screen where the
background color meets the background image.
