I quoted the below at the head, because this seems the main issue here.
MACR clearly (ShockMachine, forwarding to the bordering inane
Shockwave, and this latest snafu) is not ready to see Flash as a
mission critical app. However, obviously users are implementing
gee-whiz pages that are based on flash, we are treating flash as a
professional tool, w/as MACR is still treating flash (and Shockwave)as
a hobbyist to semi-pro tool.

Exactly. Or state clearly that it is not intended to be relied on. As
long as professionals are using these products to create mission
critical e-commerce, educational, etc. applications, there needs to be
some sort of rigorous testing and/or review by select (non-MACR) of new
versions of the player to avoid this sort (and Shockmachine) problem.
Basing critical, professional, apps. on a plug-in is not just a
challenge and a gamble because of market penetration or lack thereof,
it also puts the web developer at the mercy of the plug-in maker to
maintain a professional level of testing, design, etc.

AKkk! NO! Most people _do_ know the difference between a several MB
download for Shockwave and ~400k for Flash! Keep two plug-ins, please!
I do agree with the rest of you comments, ;-).

Yes, exactly. Provide a way to install flash from a small banner that
installs the player while the client remains on my page, I'd happily
host a small, tasteful advert. for MACR as an option to sending them
away, hoping the flashless have mastered(or bothered with)
bookmarking....

ditto. These are issues we all need to discuss and
investigate(hopefully with some sort of standards group at MACR)to
determine how to use and rely on MACR products in the future.
