Hi David,

The transparency in a gif is just one color of an image made
transparent. But an image with an alpha channel is actually 2 images,
the regular image and a second complete image for the alpha channel.
Normally, an alpha channel is a 2 color image only. How alpha channels
are handled with the PNG and other formats in Photoshop (and other
programs) and consequently when imported into Flash, I don't know. But
an image with an alpha channel is likely to be larger than one without,
with a size up to twice the size of an image without an alpha channel.
