Yes, there is a much easier way to do it. Create a masked layer to go under
the word, using the same colour as the background on the right side of the
strip and then whatever you want for the light colour on the left. You can
enhance it further by using a gradient or even better a texture instead of a
straight colour. Create a tween so that the layer will move across the text,
but underneath it. Make the text layer the mask. When the clip is played,
the bottom layer will drag under the text changing the text from background
colour to light colour as it passes through.
