I agree about the lack of real-life syntax examples.  I put up a few at

http://i-technica.com/whitestuff/actionscriptref.html (and there's more

in the piechart fla also at whitestuff), but would recommend building up

your own reference list from code that you find works, from examples at

flashkit.com, etc.
