My favorite low cost tool is a G3/G4 with a firewire (Sony Digital 8 or
varius mini-DV) camera. The MacOS simply works for DV. I also use a Pinnacle
DV500 on my PC, and its a piece of sh*t, you need at least a p3 600, at
least 256 MB of Ram, the right (Pinnacle approved) MB and Video card (at
least 16MB). And then still expect plenty of IOEs, save _OFTEN_. (Note
Pinnacle's 'minimum system' specs are much lower than mine, and it will run,
just not very long/well, and on less than a fast p3, Premiere'RT' is not
'real time' anywhere but Tulsa ;-).

We are getting a Matrox RT2000 (and building a new PC around the very
limited specs), this card has much better reviews and hopefully will be a
decent analog/firewire solution for the PC.

If you don't need firewire, I'd suggest a Pinnacle DC 30, despite the
problems Pinnacle has with DV, this old workhorse is quite nice/stable for a
low cost analog card.
