I know this isn't much of an answer, but the one of the key skills is
indeed conveying the client's message to your audience. If you can find a
visual way to express the desired ideas, and do it economically and work
well with the team, then the technical angles of the various tools just
accrue on a day-by-day basis.

Put another way, many employers these days may use "Flash experience" or
"ecommerce implementation" and the rest as a quick litmus test, but these
aren't necessarily related to whether you can get the project done to the
client's satisfaction. Visual communication skills are still very, very
highly valued. The tech stuff you can pick up, no problem.

(Well, it *seems* like there are problems with tech stuff, particularly
when you're on deadline, but all of us just absorb this nerd stuff each
day... everybody's in the same boat there.)

It can be hard to prove to someone else that you're worth the bet,
particularly when you don't yet have the expected litmus test results, but
if you can visually communicate and want to learn the new delivery methods,
then I definitely think there's demand... not sure if that's of any
concrete help, but I hope it may be....
