Sorry, you're wrong about this, your solution does not re-use the symbol.
It re-uses the _components_ of the original symbol, but those components
are not necessarily symbols in themselves. So all those components are
being stored by Flash as new items in each duplicate, not being reused as
symbols. Check it out. Make a movie with one symbol in it. Export it as a
.swf. Then make duplicates of that symbol and drag each onto the stage.
Export as a new movie. You'll find that every duplicate symbol increases
the movie size by the size of the original symbol. unless that symbol
comprises other symbols.
