OK, then given that I want to be able to tell target the mc's I make,
this is the best procedure I've found to create, use and revise
Swish-based mc's, in case it helps anyone else or in case anyone has
anything better to suggest:

In movie, create mc with 3 layers:
1) labels, frame 10 = start
2) actions, frame 1=stop, last frame of mc=stop
3) swish stuff

In swish, create the animation starting in frame 10. Put a "show"
effect in frame 1 (for aligning when the mc is put into the movie -- to
be deleted later) and hide effect in frame 2. This way I can load and
park the mc, start it with a tell target to "start", and change the
swish layer whenever I revise the animation without screwing up the
actions or tell-targeting, and without having to drag the frames around
after I import them.

End of sermon. Thanks for your help, Mark.
