The Hit area is not displayed.

Be thankful for 2 things:
1) Your images are visible in 256 mode.
2) Relatively few people (by percentage) have color set to 256.

If you need better than average results in 256 color you need to design
in that mode, use only Web safe colors and not use gradients. This will
of course will generally result in rather limited artistic choices since
the Web safe palette is very limited.
