Here it is! Based on months of viewing Flash sites on the web with a 56k
modem...the Handy LoadTime Reaction Chart...
LoadTime Viewer's Mental State
0-5 secs. No problem--let's take a look!
5-10 secs. Hmmm...a little slow, but I'll see it anyway.
10-15 secs. What am I supposed to do for 15 seconds?
15-20 secs. Who's site is this? Will it be worth the wait?
20-25 secs. [good loading animation] At least the loading intro is
good...
20-25 secs. [no loading animation] What's the friggin' holdup?
25-30 secs. Guess I have time to run to the bathroom.
30-35 secs. [with something else to do] 100k? Can you say "Fat Flash!"
30-35 secs. [nothing else to do] This *better* be impressive.
35-40 secs. [site from reputable designer] Ok, I'll wait...
35-40 secs. [site from unknown designer] Who do they think they are?
40-45 secs. I'm outta here! *click*
45 secs.& up DELIVER IT ON CD-ROM!!! *click*
---
Okay, I'll admit my patience is limited--but I'm probably pretty typical
in that regard! <g>
And let's all remember: modem speeds mean nothing--not because they
don't achieve the maximum rated speed...but because manufacturers and
designers can't predict bottlenecks. My connection slows to a crawl (or
a dead halt) frequently these days...and I'm with a huge ISP with a
fiber-optic, digital waveform multiplexing-connection to the 'net!
