Of course, it can be done. And unlike your example it will work in
Netcape 3 and IE 3 which both error on your page and they both tend to
hang those browsers (Netscape 3 sometimes hangs perminately).
I looked at it in Netscape 4 and assume IE4 works the same.

I personally like my buttons that retract on mouse over. This smooth
reversal no matter where you are at in the opening or closing the
diamond is much more difficult to implement in Flash (or JavaScript)
than your simple toggle.
I know of at leazt 2 methods of doing your button assembly with Tell
Target logic and both are as easy to implement (I would say easier) as
your JavaScript.
I am extremely busy so I don't have free time to make a demo to match
yours but we will likely do a tutorial soon that will demonstrate this
technique.
I am sure there are examples of your preferred method of button assembly
(completely done in Flash) but don't know where one is off hand.
