Breaking text apart to outline it or to apply other effects will increase
file size dramatically, especially if there's very much text. For example,
you can use the letter "A" once or twenty times, and the file size
difference will be negligible. But break it apart and the file size will be
twenty times as great!

On the other hand, you could highlight text by copying it to a lower layer,
selecting a contrasting color for the copied text, and shifting it
diagonally a few pixels to create a drop shadow or highlight.

If you need a true outline for contrast, then you will need to break the
text apart in order to apply an outline. Just keep in mind the file size
consequences. If you just want the outline itself (no fill) then you'd be
much better off finding a font that actually IS just an outline.
