If you're given a FreeHand 8 file, and only wish to use part of it in
Flash, then one easy way is to copy those desired assets to a new FreeHand
document and export only that portion. I generally drag'n'drop or
copy/paste, myself.

(I'm not sure what you have selected for the copy/paste, and so am not sure
what components might not have been understood... could have been a
PostScript effect, for instance. FreeHand can store *many* types of data on
the clipboard, and you can restrict this to just AI-style files in the
prefs, if you wish.)
