Hi Andrea.
If your submenus are separate movie clips, you can use TellTarget with a
Stop action to make each animation stop and start. You must give each
animation movie clip and instance name, and target that name (a sample
target would be "/submenu A" without the quote marks). Additionally, the
movie clip must stay on the timeline the whole time, or it will be reset to
the first frame when it's called again.
It's also possible to place a movie clip in one of the states of a button,
making it an animated button. For example, on rollover the animation
plays, on rollout it would then stop. This would reset the animation every
time (don't know if you need it to pick up where it last left off, in which
case this wouldn't work).
