I couldn't agree with Gary more. I contacted Macromedia in the early part
of summer and asked if any of their programmers would be at their booth at
SIGGRAPH. I too was blown away when they told me they didn't even plan on
having a booth. They felt their products were too web-oriented for
SIGGRAPH. I think that's where they're missing the boat. With the speed of
graphics cards today, real-time generated graphics are seeing the light.
Note the success of 3D graphics cards. I think Macromedia is making a
mistake by not pushing their technology into other fields. Consider
personal digital assistants: I don't see high-res video in their near
future. The low-bandwidth scalability of Flash would be perfect.
Personally, I'm working to develop a library of cross-platform tools:
OpenGL for 3D, Flash for 2D and Java for logic. I think its a match made in
heaven. (BTW, if anyone is interested in further discussing this idea,
e-mail at tgilbercomp [dot] uark [dot] edu).
Troy.
