As a Mac User with many friends and coworkers on PC, I would like to be able to create a Windows version of a projector file using my Mac. This would be great for Windows Flashers too I am sure.
We do provide the player applications for each platform on every copy of Flash (check your Players folder). You need the platform on which the executable will be run to create the appropriate executable standalone player. PCs have no way of recognizing or dealing with the resource fork that Macintosh applications (and some data files) use, so it's impossible to create a file on a PC that would be a standalone executable application on a Macintosh.
Although it may be theoretically possible to create a Windows executable file on a Macintosh, I've never seen anybody anywhere ever create such a thing. I would be highly careful when running such a standalone player on my computer.
Test Early, Test Often, Test On All Supported Platforms.
Especially given the cost of computers nowadays, there's no reason why you couldn't have a 486 with Windows 95 on it just for creating a standalone player. Or you could take the player and your SWF to a friend's (or coworker's) PC and create the standalone projector.
Once again, feel free to send your wishes for future versions of Flash to wish-flashmacromedia [dot] com.
