Actually I like scenes quite a bit. I don't use
them in my final authoring environment for pieces
that involve scripting but I use them for linear
pieces and screensavers. I also use scenes for
layout (love being able to duplicate a scene) and
storyboarding. I find it easier to control the
print environment from scenes.

They're not necessary, and in some circumstances
can actually cause problems (if you try to pass
variables from one scene to the next, etc). Scenes
are just an organizational tool, for authoring Flash,
and they don't make it to the final SWF file. It's
probably best to just learn to do everything without
scenes; there is no advantage to them other than
organization of your FLA (They don't help file size
either, obviously, because they don't even exist in
the SWF).
