My view FWIW is that Forward to a Friend has been superceded by encouraging social sharing. At the same time the argument could be 'why not because you get a few extra emails out of it', my view is that by limiting overall choice you can focus on those things which will really benefit you. Social sharing is great because it's one to many so you get so much more overall exposure... to many / all of the social contacts for that person in question. We've done the same on a few websites as social sharing is just so much more effective. IMHO of course!
