Mark, I think mike is bang on the money here. Hotmail, Google, Yahoo, AOL or any other volume mailer does not give a monkeys if the data was initially opt-in or not what they care about is you managing your data and not wasting their resources on dead accounts. Hotmail in particular cycle dormant accounts into spam traps irrespective of whether or not they have ever at some point in the dim an distant past opted in. Would you find it "perfectly reasonably" if you were sending your first large trial campaign for a major client through an ISP and it tanked horribly loosing you the account. The reason - some cowboy was "cleaning their list" on the same set of shared IP addresses. Everyone needs to be responsible!
