It completely depends on if you have an analytical approach to your
business and if you have the resources to use it effectively. As with many
data services, it overwhelms you with good data, but if you are not well
set up or analytical enough, it rarely turns into any sort of useful
actions that improve your business. Measuring things is all very well, but
if you can't answer the question: what do we do about it? then any data
service can be a colossal waste of money. We have worked very closely with
Hitwise data for years now, and it is the best search data in the world,
bar none, but we find the value comes from exporting and analysing it
outside of the Hitwise product. Our focus is on search, so we don't pay too
much attention to the other services, but on search it allows for
some extraordinary competitive metrics. It tracks the search expressions
into each domain, so you can compare how much of your competitors search
traffic is generic, versus their dependency on their brand. It is the only
service were you can genuinely benchmark the generic organic search traffic
within a market. Finally, the extent of the long tail of search term data
is beyond anything you can get from other services. The shame is that the
really good, deep search data is only really available for the UK market.
