Couple of issues you should address. First, nobody
(seriously) claims that Web advertising is a straight
alternative to TV/press/posters. It's a different
medium with different applications and different
possibilities. You might as well say that everybody
uses Sellotape so there must be no market for BluTak.
Secondly, by equating online brand-building with Web
advertising you're ignoring a huge range of marketing
and branding tools (partnerships, content syndication,
sponsorship, contests, promotions, multimedia, email
marketing and so on).
My personal view (and please let's not have this
debate again) is that pure Web advertising only has
value in certain fairly limited circumstances - but
that doesn't mean it's impossible to build a brand
using online techniques.
