They also have almost half a million affiliates who, when not generating
revenues for amazon and themselves through effecting sales, act as free
billboards. Which is nice for amazon, since it reduces the cost and wastage
of banner ads by a vast amount compared to the straight banner deal. Portal
deals are a different matter altogether, and have been largely disastrous
acts of hubris by e-tailers et al.
