I think I've had this rant before, but in my opinion the way forward in
Web site usage analysis is what we call "Custom Logging".

For example, for a financial client with an online calculator of some
sort we would probably create a logging system to record the uses of the
calculator, the figures entered and the number of uses per 'session'. A
simple analysis of this data would be a far more accurate measure of how
the site is performing than, say, how many times page X was visited or
graphic Y was downloaded.

Similarly, for an e-commerce site we might want to log visits, orders
placed (including amounts), shopping baskets created an so on. In fact,
with British Magazines (http://www.britishmagazines.com) this type of
information is made available to the client 24 hours a day. They can look
at the ratio of visits to orders, look at revenue generated over a given
time period and so on.

I know this is less straight forward than using an off-the-shelf stats
package (and is perhaps over-the-top for some sites), but we have found
that clients seem more than happy to pay the extra monthly fee required
to build and service "Custom Logging" systems.
